There are several steps to take prior to accreditation:

  1. Contact the Council member for your faith body to discuss a potential campus appointment. The discussion should include matters relating to financial support; the time fraction available for campus work; any required training; and, which campus/ campuses might be in mind.

  2. Obtain an application form from the CCTI Secretary.

  3. Complete the application and send it with your references together with a letter from your nominating body to the CCTI Secretary.

  4. Attend an interview arranged by the Council, with two of its members (around one hr.). It provides an opportunity for the interviewers to learn more about you and for you to learn about the work of the Council, and how it views tertiary chaplaincy. Key criteria for applicants are that they: have suitable qualifications, training, and experience; have been endorsed by their faith body; and, are willing to work within the multi-faith context of the University with the Chaplaincy team.

  5. In some Universities, applicants are also required to attend an interview with the Head of Student/Community services and members of their Religious Affairs Committee. They must also sign a memorandum of understanding regarding their appointment as chaplain.

  6. If there are any issues arising from the application, the Council will notify the nominating faith body via their CCTI member.

  7. After a successful outcome for the interview(s), the Secretary will write to the Vice-Chancellor advising of the accreditation, and recommending the applicant's appointment.

  8. The Vice-Chancellor will write to CCTI confirming the appointment. The Council sends the applicant and the nominating body copies of this correspondence, and any other information which the new chaplain will need to know regarding their appointment.

  9. Once the accreditation process is completed, the new chaplain is normally required to attend an in-service for new chaplains. He/she will also be notified about any other professional development events, including the annual conference organised by the Tertiary Campus Ministry Association.

  10. CCTI holds at least 2 professional development or in-service events during each calendar year. These events draw on current study in the field of university chaplaincy, information sessions from different faith bodies and the opportunity for chaplains to share their work or study. All chaplains are encouraged to attend these professional development events. The annual dinner in November is just one of these events, and allows all chaplains and council members to network and share their experiences of the year.

Note: All chaplains must hold a valid employee Working With Children's Check and have completed a current police check prior to their campus appointment. A certified copies should be sent to the CCTI Secretary.
